Our Foundation:

In our effort to provide prevention, education and research about eating disorders, The Eating Disorder Foundation, Inc. (EDF) was created.  EDF is a tax-exempt not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is to provide research and educate people about all aspects of eating disorders and the abuse of food, diet and the body. The Foundation's goals are the prevention of eating disorders and the abuse of one's own body through one's relationship to food. The Foundation promotes education by producing and distributing materials, programs and resources. The primary objective of the Foundation in the meeting of its goal is to raise funds to promote wellness and provide a variety of prevention and educational programs.

Alarming Statistics:

  • 40% of elementary school girls and 25% of boys report being concerned about weighing too much or fear they will become fat;
  • Early dieting is associated with increased risk for eating disorders;
  • It is estimated that at least 1 in 4 college students has a full-blown eating disorder;
  • Eating disorders are on the rise among middle school children;
  • During the 1940's, the average ideal weight for a woman 5'8" tall was 140 lbs. Presently, the 'ideal' for a 5'8"-tall woman is 112 lbs: she would not have a normal menstrual cycle and she would be anorexic.

The Foundation has established several projects designated as priority efforts:

A 12-minute film project, which discusses eating disorder cause, symptoms, and treatment, is being produced. The film will be directed toward medical, mental health and educational professionals, providing a thorough understanding of eating disorders and basic guidelines for how to provide or seek help. It will also assist professionals in speaking appropriately and compassionately with an eating disorder sufferer. A donation will be requested by professionals interested in receiving a copy.

A 30-minute film project for students in grades 8 through 12, which was produced in conjunction with Human Relations Media, Inc., is scheduled for release in August 2002. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Food Abuse and Body Image Disturbance are discussed. The video conveys these messages through discussions with recovered eating disorder individuals, capturing the intensity, severity and struggle surrounding these eating disorders and providing hope and inspiration to all students facing the cultural and societal pressures surrounding body image, food and weight. Finally, the video will provide academic understanding of eating disorders. Teachers will be supported with follow-up lesson plans—based on the video—to allow for discussion and continued learning in the classroom. The video can be ordered through Human Relations Media, Inc., at either 1-800-431-2050 or www.hrmvideo.com.

Public service announcements, including television and written publications and posters on the prevention and understanding of eating disorders to be distributed to the general public are planned. This project will be developed through coordination with area high school students. Students with an interest in media and the creative arts will design and showcase their work with an understanding that their work will be used for public distribution.  The project was started in the Fall 2002.

A dramatic production of a script dealing with an individual with an eating disorder and his or her family will be produced. The script would be intended for high-school students to take on as a school or district-wide production.
